Welcome
to Wisata Museum
Indonesia’s rich history and its
artistic and cultural heritage can be glimpsed in the various collections of
museums across the country. In an effort to showcase these treasures, the House
of Sampoerna has launched the Wisata Museum (Museum Tourism Program) to
promote public appreciation and preservation of Indonesia’s diverse heritage.
Our goal for this website is to highlight some of Indonesia’s spectacular and
interesting museums and to encourage visitors to include them in their
itineraries.

70 motif variants each with characteristics that match the region where it
develops?
Batik Nitik is a type of batik with
patterns that adopt the textile brought in by traders from Gujarat, India. The
motif and the textile have geometric shape and are made using a double ikat
technique called "Patola". There are more than 70 Nitik motifs, most
named after a flower such as Sekar kentang, Sekar kemuning, Sekar keben, Sekar
blimbing, Sekar dangan, Sekar dlima, Sekar dukhu, Sekar duren, Sekar gayam,
Sekar gudhe and Sekar jagung. Others are not named after a flower, including
Batik Nitik Cakar, Nitik Jonggrang, and Tanjung Gunung. The diversity of the

Bank Mandiri
… that there is a giant stamp that
is 8 times larger than an ordinary stamp at the Bank Mandiri Museum?
Bearing a carving of a lion head,
the stamp belonging to the Escomptobank company is 18 cm long, 7 cm wide and
14.6 cm tall, weighing 1.5 kg, which means it is about 8 times larger than the
normal 40 mm x 40 mm stamp. It was used to apply the company's seal on bank
securities and documents in the 1930's. The Escomptobank was nationalized to
become the Bank Dagang Negara (BDN) in 1960.

Geologi
…that Bandung used to be a lake?
This opinion is based on the
morphological evidence of the basin shape of the Bandung city that features
lake sediments and freshwater life fossils that have been discovered. This
theory is also supported by artifacts that have been discovered linking to
prehisotric peoples thought to have lived around a lake. Examples include a
freshwater fish fossil and snake fossil found in the Geologi Museum, Bandung.
Another indication of this is the widespread names of places that characterize
a condition where there is plenty of water, including names of regions
beginning with "ci" which means river and "ranca" which
means swamp, such as Cililin, Cidadap, Rancasari, and Rancaekek.

…that the shahada (the Muslim
declaration of belief) is printed on coins from the Majapahit kingdom?
The currency that prevailed during
the Majapahit era was Gobog, also known as pisis. The coin is made of bronze 7
cm in diameter. One side of the coin features the depiction of wayang and the
other displays an Arabic text of the shahada around a depiction of the sun, the
emblem of the Majapahit kingdom, representing the position of the gods in the 8
directions of the wind. Taking account that most of the subjects of the
Majapahit kingdom were Hindu, this is an interesting fact since it indicates
tolerance to differences from this era.

…that the Jakarta History Museum has
a set of desk and chairs that used to decide the fate of millions of people?
The large set of desk and chairs was
used by the Indies Council, the highest body of governance during the VOC era
stationed in the Batavia Castle. The Council served as a type of cabinet and
advisor to the governor general, giving it a powerful influence to the political
system of Dutch colonialism in all of Asia. On that desk, the lives of millions
of people were decided upon. These include the life of Pieter Erberveld, who
was sentenced to death by the VOC in 1921 for leading a conspiracy against the
VOC's rule.
